I suspect phpbb's spambot countermeasures have been cracked. I've switched to admin activation of new accounts to stop it for now.

I've switched the user registration page to a new 3rd-party captcha plugin. Hopefully that will stop the spammers.

I see 693 attempts to make new accounts in the access logs today, none of them successful since I put up the new captcha thing. Problem solved for now.
