Just a thought, it makes it easier for clips to attach and slide on/around the bars.

It's not just that they removed the ribbing, they also flipped it so that it has a stud, not a tube. I prefer the old one (the ribbing is better).

On the contrary, it is still a tube connection. I have the set, tested it myself, and it is still the normal connection it had before.

Ack I hate this new mold. I hope LEGO doesn't use it in any other sets, it just looks crappy without the ribbing on it. Also I don't think it looks very good in dark gray, it might look better in light gray perhaps.

I'm sad to report, I just a got a newer edition of the 5982 Smash N Grab today, and the old-style rayguns that used to come with this set have been replaced by the ribless versions. The first Smash N Grab that I got back in March 2010 had the old ribbed guns, so it does indeed look like Lego has phased out yet another one of my beloved childhood accessories. Note to Lego Parts Tooling Department: stop it already!

Quite sad. The one Smash 'n Grab I bought in September or so had the new molds,a nd I much prefer the old ones.
