I finally got around to solidifying an idea that'd been floating around in my head for a while. Ever since building the Swallowtail for FBTB's B-Wing contest, I've wanted to revisit the near-future United Martian Commonwealth (UMC) universe I'd started with that MOC. The idea of doing an APC-type vehicle, but not one that looks like it's from Aliens, popped into my head a few weeks back. I worked on this model from Wednesday until today, spending about twenty hours total buliding, redesigning, tweaking, and taking/editing pictures.

I had a few goals in mind while building:

1) Create a wheeled ground vehicle (which would be my first).
2) Create a MOC with a defined interior.
3) Have space for a "crew', meaning the ability to carry troops onboard and have more than one driver up front.
4) Create a MOC that's more complex than just a brick or two thick-- my voidfighter, for example, was basically a single plate's thickness with a brick on the top and bottom. I wanted to make something more tangible.

All in all, I really do love how the Kodiak turned out and am very proud of it. I think I accomplished all the things I set out to do from the above list, and I've definitely gotten back into a MOCing mood. I'm especially looking forward to creating more UMC-themed models to compliment the Kodiak and Swallowtail.

I can't really say much about the way it's built, since I'm not really a very experienced Space builder myself. I can say I like it a lot. I'm really lovin' the shape of this thing. It looks really heavily armored and can surely take a lot of punishment. Your interior is also very interesting. You sure cramped a lot of stuff in a small space. I also like your schematics pic a lot. How did you make it? Photoshop?

Well it certainly is heavy. I like it and I favor the interior, you did a great job arranging this small space. You've worked the underside too! Only that from the front & 3/4 view it personally gives the impression of a camper vehicle mounted with armor and weapons; with non-industrial look.

You have painted the -you know what visor minifig TrOrange item- black.BLASPHEMY!#!#! ...just kidding

Do you have any pics of the drivers' compartment in the BS folder?

The added greebles and shape are genius and prevent it from being a rolling box like it could have easily have been. The interior actually has a shape too, which is a nice idea and worked out well.

Overall a very interesting and different moc with some nice shapes, great detail and refreshing take on armoured vehicles.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I was hoping the gallery would be public by the time I woke up this morning so thanks for bearing with my deeplinks for now.

The beefiness of the thing was also one of my top priorities. I roughed out the general shape of the armor first, especially the angled sides, and got that squared away before even thinking about touching any greebles.

As I build more, I'm discovering I don't like leaving any surface untouched, for better or worse. So that leads to "a lot of stuff in there" syndrome, apparently.

Yep, Photoshop. When I was photographing the MOC I just made sure to grab straight-on front, side, rear, and under shots to be used. Cut them out of the photo and worked them into the same schematic template I'd started using with the voidfighter and swallowtail.

The funny bit is that I got so excited working the outside that by the time I went back to do the interior, I had to take it half apart again just to get inside. But luckily the back compartment was easy to get to (just opened the top doors and back hatch) and the cockpit area (come to think of it, are they called cockpits in ground vehicles?) was easy to re-assamble once it was interior'd.

You've worked the underside too!

Another "oops!" moment that turned out was (luckily) relatively easy to remedy. I'd started out with plates on the bottom of the technic beams, rather than the top like they are now. This put the floor of it about a plate above the ground, which looked stupid once I'd gotten into building. The wheels were also joined to the bricks with a single blue pin each, which weren't spinning very well. A few days into it, after having the sides and top built up, I ripped the bottom back out and hopd it would stay together without the bottom plates, which it luckily did. I remedied the super-low floor and created proper axles instead of the single-pin solution-- I think the vehicle looks and rolls a lot better now.

Yeah, I know. I actually kept thinking to myself that it looked like the "Winnebago From Hell" as the final shape took... shape. Alas! (It wasn't intentional at all, but it also sort of reminds me of the 80s version of the Ninja Turtles van... Interesting.)

That was actually what started this whole re-visit to the UMC world. I'd always wished those visors came in black so a quick trip to pick up some Krylon Fusion spraypaint and an order to BL for about 50 visors, and I was all set.

I do, yes-- in the meantime, the deeplink titled "Up front" shows an overhead shot of the cockpit.

Thanks! The various angled shapes of the different planes was something I really wanted to try and keep as I was building, and you're right-- if you take away the angles it really is a rolling box, by nature. Hopefully the rest of the construction makes it interesting enough that it's not too detrimental.

Phew!

Cool. It looks like an RV that drove through the remnants of an explosion at a Greeble factory and the shrapnel stuck.

LOL... that's a great description Adrian! while the greebles look pretty good (if excesive) some of them (like the handelbars up above the cabin) look a little tacked on. In general though, I think this is fun MOC - good troop capacity, nice detailing, lots of visual interest due to color and greebles, and with the opening top portions and interior detailing it's even got playability.

Keep it up!

Which ones? Can you point out which picture they're in?

If you mean the clip pieces in this image, those actually hold the black ramp poles (as seen here)-- I just forgot to clip them back into place when taking the photos.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it looked kind of RV-ish. However, I think jehkay's 'option' would be the perfect solution to fix the RV-look. I'm not sure what size dishes would fit on those wheels - 3x3 or 4x4. But looks like all you'd need are some additional 1x1 round plates and BOOM - armored wheels.

But overall I think it's menacing, especially since it has its own radar and missiles. I really like the interior - nice and detailed, looking just cramped enough, like real APCs. Ya'll ever seen pics of the inside of a Bradley? Not so much in the leg room dept.

edit - the word 'dishes'; without it, the post doesn't make much sense

I meant these handlebars (sorry for my attrocious spelling earlier... I don't know what came over me!). Those handlebars clipped in there are indicative of the kind of "tacked on" look I mentioned in the post. They just don't seem to fit there, and they're not well integrated. Of course, that's just my opinion, and to be honest, I've done a lot worse in the greeb department, so take this with as many grains of salt as you please.

Cheers,
Jared

Nice to see you here Jamie. As always, I'm really impressed with your presentation. The schematic is just as creative as the MOC. I'd like to see that kind thing more often. I'm sure Doc, Mac, BB and Assistant will really dig their new wheels.

Over all I like it. However, along with armoured wheel covers some kind of cover over the windscreen would, in my humblest of opinions, help to reinforce the "this is an armoured vehicle not an RV" at first glance I too thought it was either an RV or a scientific rover of some kind. Most APCs/IFVs that I have been exposed to, Bradleys, M113 and BDMs with the exception of that Renault one the French army drives, the name escapes me at the moment, do not even have windshields just periscopes and hatches for the driver.

Except the windscreen, which is so... bushish, it is great. Maybe do a narrow, one-plate high offsetted viewport in front and a turret (or something like that)? Also, something protecting the wheels from enemy fire would fit in the theme I think.

Will I find a 1x1 plate with studs on both sides in the Heaven?
