"You control the action" is more than just a tag line in a LEGO advertising campaign, more than a philosophy; it is a contest of skill. With a few notable exceptions, Hollywood and popular science fiction novels have taught us that the future is largely populated by caucasians with a sense of celestial manifest destiny. Since LEGO has taken steps to widen the racial rainbow, I think it is time we celebrate the minority in Science Fiction. I can hear those of you saying, “what about Uhura, what about Lando?” All I can say to that is true, but a white man sat in the big chair and Lando was awesome but still a back stabbing criminal and a token character. Lawrence Fishburne in Event Horizon?…well, what happened to his ship and crew? Will Smith inherits the earth?....oh that’s right… it turns out to be ghetto world and the white people are trying to eat him. My favorite example of this kind of racism or at best cultural insensitivity in sci-fi is 1951’s “When World’s Collide” http://www.amazon.com/When-Worlds-Collide-Richard-Derr/dp/B00005NG6A/ref=cm_lmf_img_18, In this so called "classic", only the smart clean white people get to evacuate the planet via rocket-ship when the apocalypse comes. I challenge this year’s contestants to play the race-card and bring us unique visions of a racially diverse future, or tackle the delicate subject of racism. For those of you paste-eaters who still don’t get it, think a dream-catcher shaped stargate, a Gambian lunar colony…or a macuahuitl shaped battle cruiser of the New Aztec Empire. Those of you who appreciate the history of space exploration, you could try your hand at a tribute to GUION BLUFORD JR http://concreteloop.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/bluford.gif IMPORTANT: DO NOT post questions to this or any other thread about the following boilerplate rules and regulations. DO NOT add anything to this thread except contest entries. If you want to comment on the entries, wait for the contestants to post them either in a separate thread or on another site. Most contestants are attention-seekers by nature, so you’ll get your chance to comment. Please use a SINGLE PHOTO in this thread along with a link to as many photos as you like. To reiterate, I just want entries in this thread. If you have questions about these or any of the following rules: 1. Search your soul and find your own answers: You Control the Action 2. Ask a friend. If you don’t have a friend, make one: You Control the Action 3. If you object to the theme of this contest or have a really, really good question you can complain to me via PM or publicly on my Flickrstream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/61671941@N00/ ENTRY RULES: 1. No previously posted MOCs. 2. All entries must be submitted to his thread. Don't PM it to me, don't email it to me. 3. NO YELLOW MINIFIGS: With the exceptions of the Asians (Ninja/Adventurers) and the American Indians (Wild West) and any other yellow-heads I’ve forgotten that are specifically meant to represent a particular race. 4. No Halo, Star Wars or other franchise themes. This isn't a corporate contest, Johnny-builder (with the obvious exception of LEGO). Also, fan related franchise themes are strictly prohibited unless you are the sole creator of said theme. Please [****], no Iron Reich. 5. You must have a TITLE for your MOC, and it must contain at least one VERB. If it's down to two or more MOCs for my final consideration, I'll take the one with the best title. 6. LEGO ELEMENTS ONLY, no part modification, no clone brands, no aftermarket parts no custom anything. This is a “purist” contest. 7. There are no rules for size or composition. You control the action. 8. Limit one entry per contestant. DURATION: Start Date: NOW End Date: January 1, 2010. Use your own Time-Zone. You control the action. THERE WILL BE NO EXTENSIONS THIS TIME, no matter how much Ryan Wood cries. AWARDS!: There are three awards for you to lord over your peers as they lay defeated on the floor, cringing in abject fear and jealousy. 1. The King (or Queen) of the Action! Award. * This is simply the MOC that best conveys a sense of "The Action", combined with the theme of “a celebration of minorities in sci-fi”. The Action" is best defined as using minifigs (in this case non-yellow minifigs) to convey a sense of a thing done. Simply select your favorite verb (yes, even something like resting), and apply it to your MOC through the use of minifigs. 2. The Hottest Action Award. Simply put, the best use of either male or female minifig(s) to convey a sense of hotness within the theme of “a celebration of minorities in sci-fi”. 3. The "That's Crazy Talk!" Award. This is for you purveyors of the bizarre. There is every possibility that nobody wins this award, because your entry really has to seem odd to me. It has to literally provoke me to point at my computer screen and say aloud That's Crazy Talk! If you require further clarity concerning this award, cap yourself. Oh, and again, it has to be within the theme of “a celebration of minorities in sci-fi”. *Don't sink too low with your entry or The Man (Rubin or one of his steely-eyed thugs) will yank your entry from the thread, and the contest. Believe me, I love low-brow action, but this is a pg-13 site. Think scalpel, not broadsword with your social commentary, or raunchy tendencies. For those of you who think this is some kind of an excuse to express your inner racist, do not. FABULOUS PRIZES: Owing to the fact that I no longer have my Ambassadorial hook-ups (Thanks again to Steve Witt for last year’s haul), there will only be prizes for each of the 3 award winners, and they will likely not be so fabulous. This time it is more about glory than loot, and celebrating minorities in Sci Fi. JUDGING: Sorry Johnny-builder, this is the only place you DON'T control the action. I am your judge and jury. I am also your executioner if your Kung-Fu is weak. All forms of bribery will be considered, but don't bother unless you REALLY have something outstanding to offer. Didn't anyone around here pay attention in History class? "Those who forget the past..." Ambassador Hawkins took us on a tour of his mining operation, and now I know how he keeps his profit margins so high: He avoids the mining equipment cartel almost entirely by using indigenous animals to do all the work. These "chickenrabbits" are an interesting species. Hawkins referred to their frequent singing as "birdcalls," but some of their utterances seemed too complex. He was content to claim it as evidence that they were happy. I don't know how they normally behave, but some of the chickenrabbits were obviously agitated about something, and one of them was bold enough to approach us. I went to meet it, and Hawkins immediately ordered his guards to stop me, claiming it was for my own protection. If that was true, how come the guards all had their guns pointed at me? Silver and Hoyle took his side, so I think I'm going to have to return on my own for a closer look (I don't know how Hawkins kept a straight face while referring to our brief visit as an "inspection." ). I'm beginning to wonder if the chickenrabbits should even be called "animals"... | ||
