LOVE THIS IRON!

I’ve had cheap-eo irons and I’ve had $150 irons. This one is the best I’ve ever used. And let me say that back in the “olden days” I used to even have an ironing business (when I was in my early teens) for people in my neighborhood, so I know how to handle an iron! LOL We ironed everything in my home: shirts, pants, curtains, pillowcases. So…..

What I love about it:
The weight. It’s not too heavy but it’s heavy enough. Too light of an iron won’t do the job well.
The steam is fantastic. When turned up to the highest setting it really puts it out.
The quickness of heat-up….one word: seconds. Boom.
No drips, no weird water marks. Ever. (Those are deal breakers to me)

What I don’t love:
Non-retractable cord. I know, I’m lazy.
The location of the steam adjustment. Inevitably I accidentally turn it down (or off) while I’m ironing.

Bottom line: Do not waste your money on a different iron. This one is THE BOMB. No drips, no splatters, amazing steam, perfect weight, great soleplate (stainless and smoooooth), excellent ability to get around buttons and in pleats with the ridge around the point….it’s just a fantastic iron and an amazing price.

I’ve had this iron for a long time (maybe 8 years). I iron almost every day, and this iron has been a trooper. I am hard on my iron – I’ve knocked it onto hard floors several times, and it keeps going. I travel a LOT, so I’ve used a wide variety of irons at hotels and people’s homes and this iron has many advantages over other irons.
STEAM: Strong steam with a steam burst feature that blasts the steam. I have yet to come across an iron that uses steam as effectively as this one at this price point. I love the look of heavy starch on shirts, but I only need to use light starch on linen and cotton shirts and people ask me where I get my shirts done. There are various steam settings to control the amount of steam. Obviously, the more steam you use, the faster you have to fill the water.
NO STEAM: I leave the water in the iron, turn the dial to “no steam,” and iron without leaks.
NO LEAKING: The only time I had issues with it leaking was when I used distilled water when I first got it.
WATER and WATER DISPLAY: I’ve lived in five states in the last six years, so I’ve had all kinds of tap water from soft to hard. I’ve never had a problem with using tap water with this iron, and I haven’t had problems with build up. A couple blasts with steam surge seem to clear all the calcium out. No issues with rusting either. I lost the little plastic water cup that came with the iron a long time ago, but I find it easy to fill just using a cup from the bathroom sink or a creamer filled with water. This iron is much easier to fill than many others I’ve encountered. Some seem to have a trick hole that require you get just the right angle for the water to enter the reservoir. The water reservoir is also really easy to see. Many irons don’t show you how much water is remaining – it’s either too hard to read or it just indicates when it’s full. It’s very easy to see when you hit the max water line.
SPRAY MIST: It works well, but I rarely use it. Typically only if I run out of starch or don’t want to starch something (e.g., the no-iron shirts that can’t take starch). The water cap is great. There is a little snap it makes, so you know it is actually sealed. I’ve never had an issue with it being loose or breaking.
LED DISPLAY: The numbers are big and easy to read, It beeps and reads “READY” when it is heated to the desired temp.
7 HEAT SETTINGS: it heats quickly, and there are a broader range of heat settings than many other irons, which I prefer. You just tap the button once for 1, twice, for 2, etc. When the iron is plugged in but automatically shuts off, I just tap it once, and it is pre-set at whatever the last setting was (e.g., 6). If you unplug the iron, you have to cycle through to the setting you want again. It beeps when it’s ready. So if I’m ironing on 4, and I tap it twice to get to 6, it will beep to let me know it’s ready. I don’t recall it beeping if I go down a setting (e.g., going from 6 to 3). But I typically increase the heat, so I may be wrong. The other thing I love is that when it is set to 6, I can refill it while the iron is hot (I’m sure there is a warning in the directions against that) and i don’t have to wait for it to reheat. I can just keep going. It also indicates the appropriate number for the fabric: 1=acetate & acrylic, 2=nylon & silk, 3=polyester & rayon, etc.)
AUTO-OFF Leave the iron plugged in, and it powers off automatically. The red light stays on to indicate it is plugged in, but the digital display will be blank to indicate the iron is off
STAINLESS STEEL: I had a teflon iron, but this work better. I don’t have issues with starch building up on it either. When I’ve gone a little crazy with the starch (e.g., linen napkins), I just hit the steam surge and it leaves a fine film of starch that I can pick off the ironing board. The only time I ever had to manually clean the surface was when I dropped the hot iron on a synthetic rug that melted and left residue on the plate. I’ve never had an issue with it scorching either.
AUTO CLEAN: I’ve never used it.
WEIGHT: It’s heavier than many irons, but I that probably contributes to its effectiveness.
NON-RETRACTING CORD: This is my preference, since the retracting cords seem to either jam and not extend or break and not retract fully.
THE REASON FOR 4 INSTEAD OF 5 STARS:
– The steam dial can easily be turned when ironing. I have to check sometimes, that is hasn’t moved to a lower steam setting and readjust it.
– The iron will shut off while you are ironing. Not a big deal, since you just tap the heat setting button to turn it back on and keep going. It’s just an inconvenient quirk.
– The cord is a little short. Given where my outlet is and where I have space for an ironing board, I would prefer a really long cord. In fairness, this has only been an issue in my current place and not the previous 7 residences.
– The iron can damage material if the heat is too high. This is probably my fault, but with all the funky fabrics out there, it’s hard to know what setting to use (e.g., lycra, viscose, tencel)

Just putting in my two cents’ worth,despite how many reviews there already are, so I may be repeating things other have said. First, let me say that I am throwing away two Rowenta irons, each of which cost almost double what this one did. They had such small water reservoirs that I was constantly refilling them, and, eventually, both began spitting water all over the clothes, regardless of the settings being used, rendering them useless despite some features I liked. I am using my new Black and Decker iron for the first time today. After ironing three items, I have the following observations. I like a heavy iron, and this one is. I love that it has a very large water reservoir and that the cup for filling it has a pour spout which essentially eliminates spills when filling the reservoir. Unfortunately, the dark gray color of the reservoir makes it nearly impossible to monitor the rise of the water as you are filling it, and there is a “Max” line at which one needs to stop. The color choice was almost certainly more for the overall appearance of the iron, than for practicality. Also, being right-handed, I would have preferred the Burst of Steam button to be on the left rather than the right, because I rarely use the spray button. It was on the left on the Rowentas, so it’s going to be a habit I have to break, because I keep spraying my clothes! Also, on the Rowenta, the Burst of Steam function made a distinct “bursting” sound when engaged, so you knew it was working. Also, the burst was very powerful, and was great for removing wrinkles. It is impossible to tell, with this iron, whether any “bursting” is going on. I do like that this iron seems to get much warmer at the higher settings than my old irons, which I had to keep on the highest setting for almost everything I ironed. Basically, I am very satisfied with this iron, but realize that, as I continue to use it, there may be more pros and cons. If something really concerning happens, I’ll post another review.
