There are two basic types of saunas that you can buy: the indoor sauna and the outdoor sauna. Indoor saunas have been around for quite some time now. They have grown in popularity because they are a convenient way to use your home, without having to travel or deal with the weather. Most people enjoy spending time in the sauna, whether alone or with a friend or two. Indoor saunas can be found almost anywhere; from malls to gyms to even some high-end homes. You should know a few things before you start shopping for your own.
First, figure out the room you will put the sauna in. Make sure there is enough room for the sauna and whatever accessories you may purchase. Keep in mind the amount of space you have, so make sure not to place the sauna too close to a wall, as it will be difficult to get in and out. Measure the area where the sauna will be placed, and set a mark on the wall to guide your sauna purchase.
Second, pick out the style and material for your sauna. There are dozens of different materials to choose from. If you plan on using the sauna for more than one person, then think about whether you want a metal or wood sauna. Metal ones are much heavier than wood ones, but both have their advantages. A metal sauna can often stand up to humid climates better than a wooden one, although if you really decide to go with one of these, be prepared for it to get dirty and possibly stained.
Third, look into the heating method. The traditional method of heating saunas is with hot coals. However, if you want one person in your sauna, this isn’t always practical. If you are planning on using your sauna frequently, you might consider infrared heat. This is a little more expensive, but it’s much more efficient and works well to keep a person warm.
Fourth, determine how you’re going to ventilate your sauna. There are dozens of options for this. You can either buy a fan that attaches to the ceiling or run ducts throughout your home. Both of these are fairly cheap to install and don’t require any special expertise.
Fifth, consider the insulation of your sauna. Be sure to buy a unit with a triple ply insulation. This is the most energy efficient. It also allows you to control the amount of heat that comes into the sauna. If you plan on using your sauna for more than two people, then you’ll probably want to invest in a double-ply unit. These are a bit more expensive, but the extra money is well worth it.
Sixth, figure out how many inches of floor space you have available. This should dictate which type of sauna you select. The traditional infrared heating units take up the most space, which makes them better for use in larger spaces such as a large apartment or condo. Indoor steam saunas are smaller and require less floor space, making them ideal for two people. They do, however, take up more space and use much electricity.
The above six factors will play a large role in your selection of the right indoor sauna for you and your budget. Once you’ve selected the one that best fits your needs, then you’ll be ready to enjoy your new accessory! Remember, as with anything else related to your health, safety is paramount. To help you avoid injuries while using your sauna, be sure to follow all the guidelines outlined.
