Describe your product in 3 words.
Experience wine differently!
How did you come up with the idea for this product?
Coravin is the brainchild of Greg Lambrecht, a man with a background in physics, mechanical engineering, and medical devices. Being a lover of wine, Greg was challenged while his wife was pregnant in not being able to enjoy a great glasses of wine, without pulling the cork and committing to the full bottle. He tried preservation systems, but regardless of the preservation method, each time he pulled the cork, oxidation started and heâd have to finish the bottle or waste the remaining wine. His dream was to magically pour wine from bottles without ever pulling the cork, allowing someone to enjoy a bottle again and again, when they desired. And after many years of trial and tribulations, Coravin was born.
What makes your product special?
Coravin is unlike any other product on the market. It gives you the freedom to pour and enjoy a glass of wine from any bottle at any time. Its proprietary technology keeps the cork in place, while allowing the wine to flows, protecting the wine remaining in the bottle from oxidation. The Coravin System will transform the way you experience wine.
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
The best part of launching Coravin is discovering new ways to experience wine, and sharing it with other wine lovers, all while knowing that it will forever change the world of wine!
However, functionality is improved over the original Model 8. The big improvement in the new Model One is the clamping system. Itâs designed a little differently to fit more bottles and has a MUCH softer spring, making it easier to use. As I said, the plunger/needle is the same. The clamp on the Model One is all plastic. There are no rubberized grips like on the Model Two Elite but itâs got a soft touch grip built into the clamping system- those are the blue parts on the side. This model comes with the new standard needle that allows wine to be poured 20% faster than with the original needle. It worked just fine in my tests with corks up to 10 years old and in good condition. I would be hesitant to use it on a 20+ year old cork whose integrity may not be intact.
I gave the Model One, 5 glorious shining stars. I think Coravin made a smart move with this model. They cut the price and went with function over form. This is the OPPOSITE case as opposed to the Model Two Elite. (Please see my review of that model for the similarities and differences.) This Model One comes with one needle. There is NO stand such as the rubber base that came with the Model 8. It comes with the standard bottle protector sleeve and two gas capsules. And itâs $100 cheaper than the older Model 8 AND $150 less than the newer Model Two. It functions exactly the same! At $200 total cost, this is actually a bargain for what youâre getting! Thatâs assuming it holds up over time.
One concern I had was the cheap looking white plastic. I was afraid that it would stain if red wine were to get on it. So I did a test and let several drops of a thick, full bodied red sit on the top of the handle for 5 minutes. Soap and water took it right off. No stain remained. However, I canât say what will happen if you leave it uncleaned overnight. My suggestion is to rinse it immediately after use to keep it looking new. It also feels as if this plastic is lighter-weight in quality than the Model Two Elite. I donât care for the color choices at all. But my wine is more important than the color of my Coravin. Thatâs where I spend my money. If I want to impress someone, Iâll use my Lagioule wine key to open the bottle. But Iâd rather impress people with the quality of my wine choices instead.
My background and qualifications for this review are that I am an oenophile for the past two decades and have over five hundred bottles of wine in my cellar. I tested the original Model 8 in various ways over the past year and found it to function just as the company said it would. Iâve âCoravinedâ a bottle and then laid it back down for 10 months with NO noticeable difference upon trying it again. This has been tested over various bottles of different types of wine with specific tasting notes take for each and then compared. Iâve also read some of the testing that has been done with a room full of professional Sommeliers. Itâs impressive and if you use it properly, it will work perfectly. The Model One functions exactly the same and will perform identically.
With that being said, I do not feel that the casual wine drinker needs this. If you enjoy the occasional glass of a $20 wine, I would suggest you save your money. I use this to feel out wines Iâm going to cellar. I taste, lay them back down and repeat when my estimated drinking date is closer. The other nice use for this is when you donât want to open a moderately priced bottle since no one is there to drink it with you. Pour a glass with the Coravin and save the other 80% of the bottle for the next time. The more expensive the wine and the more frequent you drink wine, the more this device makes sense. Itâs also great for restaurants and tasting rooms that are pouring more expensive wines by the glass. You see them all throughout Napa and Sonoma in tasting rooms. Donât forget that youâll need to purchase replacement gas capsules as well. They are $10 each and youâll get approximately 3 bottles of wine if you use them properly.
One last little tip I will offer is this. Each time, before using it, make sure the needle is securely screwed into the unit. The needle base can loosen and precious Argon gas can leak out when pouring wine. So to be safe, I check this before every use.

When you pour it, there is a strange film that comes out with the wine.
It takes forever to get a glass poured and you need to pump it multiple times.
One cartridge only lasted me through about 4 bottles of wine.
For the price, I just don’t think it’s worth it.
Also, the construction feels pretty shoddy. For hundreds of dollars, the materials could be better.
It is the only device on the market that can allow you to drink a glass from a bottle without spoiling it, so…
