Great price for a reasonable amount of storage for an aging 2012 Mac Book Pro 13″. It replaced a 500GB mechanical drive which only had 80GB used. With cloud and home NAS becoming practical large volume storage solutions, I think 250GB will be plenty for this laptop.

There’s not much to say about the appearance of the hardware, it’s pretty straightforward. Much lighter than the mechanical drive. The real importance here is the difference in speed from the 5400rpm mechanical drive this replaced. From powered off, to logged in, to running Chrome in under 35 seconds! It used to take minutes to get to a login screen, load a user profile, and start any program.

The process for swapping data and physical drives is pretty easy. Using a USB 3 to SATA III adapter and a bootable USB OSX installer, I installed a brand new version of High Sierra on this drive, created a bonus admin account, then used the OS X Migration Assistant, to copy two user accounts from the original drive, and removed my bonus admin account.

Great for SSD for the money and great for my new build desk top. Amazing speed over regular SATA drives and that makes them a good location for system programs and while keeping larger SATA drives for data. Makes for super fast boots and programs loading. Very pleased with the performance.

I’ve been a Crucial fan since my first Crucial SSD purchases about 18 months ago. I don’t think they are top of the line speed wise but are very fast and a great value for the money. While performing a disk copy from another internal Crucial drive to this one speeds reached 340MB per second. Typically they were around 240MB per second. This all depends on the number and size of the files being copied and the capabilities of your computer. Given the performance of my earlier drives they seem quite reliable. I also purchased the Crucial MX300 1TB SATA M.2 at the same time.

Plugged it in, formatted it, worked like a champ. Easy Peasy.

We bought our pre-retina mid-2012 MacBook Pro back in January 2013, and it’s been our main computer ever since. However, that laptop was starting to run so sluggish that we were worried that maybe Apple had planned our computer’s obsolescence, just as they’ve admitted to doing with their older phones. As a last ditch before giving up, we decided to try swapping our old spindle hard drive for a much faster SSD and do a clean operating system reinstall along with the new drive. The result was nothing short of miraculous, literally as if our computer was reborn and reenergized. I cannot recommend this product more highly.

That said, there are some things anyone considering buying this particular product on its own should think about:

1) Make sure you can actually use it. In particular, if you’re thinking about using this product to replace a current laptop drive, make sure your laptop or other computer is actually designed to let you do that. I know Apple doesn’t make any more laptops with 2.5″ hard drive bays, let alone hard drives this size that are also easily accessible. I can’t speak about various Windows laptops or Chromebooks but my sense is that in general many increases in a laptop’s sleekness or fanciness come at the expense of being amenable to DIY user upgrades. (Apparently you can still switch hard drives in Playstations though.)
You could also go ahead and buy an enclosure (such as this or an open hard drive dock (such as this) and use this hard disk externally – I always put my old hard drives into enclosures. However, given that it’s essentially just as expensive (or cheap) to buy a proper external hard drive, the only reason to buy a dock or enclosure would if you actually can install this SSD and are looking for a way to continue using your older drive.
2) If you are able to install this SSD into your computer or game console and you plan to, make sure you have the right tools. Apple laptops in particular have weird screws requiring triangular or hexagonal screwdrivers. This particular SSD does not come with those tools, but you can get them in a kit – LB1 this one looks to be quite comprehensive.
3) I have to give the usual warnings though: when you do the hard drive swap, A) make sure you have instructions for your particular machine, B) make sure you don’t lose any screws and remember which ones go where, and C) ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS make sure you at least ground yourself regularly to keep yourself from frying your drives with static. (Alternatively, you can wear one of these.)

Replaced a data-storage hard drive in my old Mac Pro with this SSD and have been very impressed. Smoking fast, and no more clicking noises when I access my iTunes library. The smaller size doesn’t really matter to me, as it’s in the same — beautiful classic — Mac Pro aluminium box, but it has to be better for internal airflow and power usage. I ordered the OWC Mount Pro 2.5″ Drive Sled for 2009-2012 Apple Mac Pro that I’ve used before, and with four screws and five minutes I was back up and running. A gig of super-fast storage just like that. The old gal will keep on keeping on for quite a while longer. Absolutely no issues. Very happy.
