Espoma Organic Potting Mix, 1cu ft – Pack of 4

First, a heads-up: this is my first time trying anything related to gardening.

I’ve used this potting mix with a plant that needed a bigger pot, and it seems to be happy and is growing and doing well.

I’ve also used this potting mix with herb seeds. Zziggysgal 12 herbs, to be exact. On the individual seed packets it said 15-21, or 20-25 days to sprout, or thereabouts. Out of the first batch of six different herb seeds, the first ones sprouted in three days, and the rest sprouted within a week.

My second batch I only planted three days ago, but already after two days one of them has sprouted.

I have not been using any extra fertilizer. All I did was plant three or so seeds in each hole, water them with water in a baby bottle, make sure they’re good and soaked for the first 24 to 48 hours (you’re supposed to pre soak the seeds, but I soaked them in the soil instead). Then cover them with see-through plastic (I cut open a large zip lock bag). There was no sun involved, but around 70 F or so indoors.

I don’t know if I got really lucky on the seeds I got, or if this soil is just that good, but my other plant is doing great as well.

It smells “earthy”, and has little white balls in it, that’s how it’s supposed to be. It also has some small pieces of wood and thin twigs.

I’ve only kept the herbs and my plant indoors for now (a couple of weeks), I have not seen any bugs or anything yet. I’ll update the review if I do.

I ordered this organic potting soil to use for a project I’m doing with my kids. We are attempting to grow our own vegetables and I wanted some good quality soil to plant them in. I figured it would be really silly to go to the lengths of finding organic seeds just to plant them in crappy soil. We used our own little buckets as flower pots and we had more than enough soil to plant them in.

I absolutely feel confident that this is good quality soil. It was very soft and seemed fresh. I believe that the quality of the soil you plant in matter just as much, if not more, than the quality of the seeds you use.

Overall, I’m very happy with this purchase and I can’t wait to see how yummy and delicious our veggies turn out!

A plant’s absolutely thrive on this stuff. I’ve often found with other commercially available Soil that they frequently include foreign debris live worms and many gnats.

This soil does not have that problem. It’s very rich well mixed and has turned my black thumbs green. Love love love it.

I wish I had listened to the reviewers warning me about this soil. I repotted my plants and a few days later my they were all covered in fungus gnats. It sounds like this doesn’t happen to everyone, but I wouldn’t risk it. When I went to my local nursery to ask about how to deal with the gnats, they said the brand was a good brand, but that if the bag had been sitting in a large warehouse for a while it could lead to issues with the soil. So don’t buy this online. it’s terrible. I lost a lot of my plants and trying to save the rest was a pain. (side note, you can’t tell if the soil has fungus gnat eggs in it just by looking at it. I had tried to check).

Some reviewers on here mentioned there being bugs in the soil. As much as I wanted to love the soil because it is organic, I also got bugs in my plant, which ended up dying. I did not see any bugs in the soil itself, but I only had bugs in the one plant that I used this soil in.

I bought it to sprout oat grass seeds for my pets but for some reason this potting mix inhibits seed sprouting. Might be okay for established plants. I won’t buy it again. This product claims to have a money back guarantee but don’t believe it, never got a response to my request.

This is a really nice, rich potting mix. My plan was to grow some oat and wheat grass for my indoor pets to eat. For this reason, I chose an organic soil. I planted the seeds in a long plastic planter with a clear plastic lid and placed it in the sunlight below a south-facing window (it’s winter here in Minnesota). Within four days the grass had sprouted and grown to a height of 1 inch. I hadn’t even bothered to check it till then, because I didn’t expect any growth at all that soon. I was amazed. I imagine this was the result of using a good seed and a great potting mix. I couldn’t be more pleased.

I am a first time gardener and I planted 5 variety of seeds and all 5 have sprung up in this mix. I also replanted a moneytree in this soil (it needed a bigger pot) and it’s doing amazingly. It seems to be great multipurpose soil. I bought this mainly because I didn’t want a huge bag from Home Depot. This size is perfect for a few small-medium sized houseplants or herbs. The bag is very nice with the zipper. I keep it in a cool and dry closet inside and have had no issues and it doesn’t smell.
