Due to some issue with this drive and Synology, Synology does not enable a write cache for it. That’s pretty messed up for a drive that’s built for NAS usage and for the partnership that Synology and Seagate claim to have. Search for ST10000VN0004-1ZD101 and write cache in google and you’ll see the issue. It seems like the newer 10 TB model ST10000VN0008 does not have this issue. The only problem is that no one really sells that yet. I’d stay clear of this drive for use with Synology. There is no definitive timeline for a fix.
Other than that, the disks are pretty loud whenever they’re written to. It may be made worse due to the lack of the write cache since anything will cause the disk to write immediately.
I’ll be sending these back and perhaps the Synology as well.
Title line says explicitly 4TB 7200 RPM. I noted a drive going down on my Drobo and ordered on Sunday; Amazon had it at my door before I left for work Monday am, so that was amazing… but that also led me to quickly insert it to start rebuild before I left for work. It estimated 10 hours so it would be done by the time I got home. Now home it claims 4 hours left and Drobo says it is really 5800 RPM. Checking my order again, indeed the title claims 7200 for the 4TB, but lower in the ad section where it says in large text 7200 in smaller text underneath is says 5900 for ‘lower capacity’ versions. Finally in the product comparison it claims it to be 5900. It however is not even 5900, but rather 5800. Now I’ve got this inserted and nearly merged into the RAID data set, so it remains to be seen whether Amazon will agree to take it back. Were I to leave it there it would compromise the performance of the box for as long as it remained in place, so that is not much of an option. Perhaps I will let it finish and then do a disk benchmark to quantify the slowdown before deciding, but very unhappy with the situation.
This drive is missing standard screw mount points and will not fit into some drive sleds.
Usable space on the 10TB I paid $300 for is only 8.73

I’ve been running a few of these in my FreeNAS for about a year, and when it came time to increase storage size I bought a few more without hesitation. Nice that they give detailed drive information for monitoring (temperature, load averages, etc) and are whisper quiet. Shock protection is also great, I dropped one on tile floor while I was getting it out of the box and it had zero problems passing all tests and badblocks, not a single dead sector. I’ve had a few consumer grade drives fail in my NAS over the years, but not a single one of these has come close to breaking. Well worth the slightly higher cost if you have critical data to back up (or you just want additional peace of mind) 🙂

Early on its hard not to be satisfied with the Seagate IronWolf. The NAS grade hard drives are more expensive than regular ones but, we hope, they are designed to run 24/7 for a long time. It is whisper quiet which was a really nice change from my old set up. But…the only review that will count is the one I could give you in about ten years.
Installation a breeze, no noise, and storage capacity for the price awesome. Great product!

Pleased with my purchase so far. set it up as a single disk in my nas for now, was noticeably louder when formatting but seems to have settled down. Space is being reported at 9.10TB.
The drive has onboard software that reports bytes read and written and extra stats which I havent looked into. My QNAP 451+ can read this data.
When my older drives die eventually I will replace them all with this, highly recommended.
UPDATE: after ordering I have noticed that is quite a bit more noisy than the WD hard drive it replaced. Not a big deal just means I have to close the door where my NAS is located.
UPDATE 2: the drive has started to rattle. It claims it’s healthy. Not sure out the drive long term. Dropped another star.
6 months in. no issues.:)
Packaging perfect – drives quick and very quiet. Buy with confidence.

Ok so it’s a toss-up WD reds or these. I have both in different places, and so far no problems with either (where’s some wood, come on, come on, I need to touch some now). Or there is also the Tosh N300 series – slightly cheaper. I haven’t tried them yet.
As a product made in millions all HDDs like this are going to be pretty much of a muchness I think, so one review isn’t going to influence your decision much I suspect. So why write one? Well I wanted to question/dispel a few concerns in other reviews on here.
Firstly the big one – the packing of these non retail boxed drives from Amazon was probably as good as it gets – well done someone. The boxes are marked as ‘Seagate approved packaging’ – not a retail box but solid and foam-filled. This box had drive model and serials printed on it. So as far as I can tell it originates in the factory. So no more scare stories about bare drives in bags (although I have experienced this myself too – years ago).
Secondly, these are very quiet. I’ve just thrashed a raided pair for about 24 hours solid copying across a fairly slow NAS and didn’t notice noise or any excess temperature issues. They have running in total for about a week, so early time yes I admit, but waiting till I had a few years on them would hardly help you as the design would have changed by them no doubt. I’ll come back and update if anything untoward happens.
Want more storage – don’t we all – I should say buy with confidence.

Easy to use hard to Partition initally.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 27, 2019
Rating a product intended for long term use makes little sense but years on it will be too late.
I have given the rating of 4 stars overall because there is a dearth of information about partitioning these large drives. Thankfully Rod Smith of RodsBooks was kind enough to give detailed information and a lot of his time to solve my problem.
Basically, the problem was how to set up partitions that where the partition boundary aligned with a physical sector boundary. Easy if you use Rod’s gdisk software and read his work on partitions. Easily found on google. The problem arises because the physical sector size is 4096bytes but the logical sector size is 512 bytes. So to align the partition needs to start on a sector whose number is exactly divisible by 8. Rod’s software suggests a default start of sector 2048 for the first partition and each subsequent partition needs to start on a sector whose number is exactly divisible by eight. Mercifully, gdisk offers a default start sector for second and subsequent partitions.
So why do I dock a star – because trying to find this simple information was hard and could be resolved by giving it with the disk or making it easy to find on the Seagate site.

be warned! this hard drive is not 7200rpm. I was pretty disappointed when i found this out after buying the drive. it is a 5900 rpm drive so don’t be expecting 7200. I sure wish this was labelled correctly on the Amazon listing but what else can you do eh.
spindle speed aside this is a great drive for a nas. mine has been on for 4 days straight now and its keeping cool and still up and running.
@Amazon fx the listing before other buyers like me get disappointed after buying and loading it with personal data, i dont want to return it for an actual 7200 rpm drive after all my personal files are on it

Got this for my NAS

I got this HDD for my 2-bay NAS, RAID 1. I have no issue with them, 24/7. The product package was not good – plastics and thin cardboard boxes, very cheap feel … anyway, the hard drives were fine when delivered.
bait and switch, be careful when you purchase.

This product might be good, it might not be, but I won’t know since I ordered 2 (RAID) but my order was changed to 1 without any notification. I’m only allowed to purchase a single drive which kind of misses the point of a RAID drive. No indication that I was only allowed to purchase a single drive, and now I’m pushed back another month while waiting for new drives.
This was an “Amazon’s Choice” product, but nowhere did it say there was a limit. I like Seagate products which is why I chose this drive, but this is a shady business practice, and the vendor should be punished for it.

I am very disappointed that not only did this drive fail to format in my NAS; but also, on returning the drive after several unsuccessful attempts to format it, I only received half the money back. I have replaced it with another competitor’s product (WD RED) which has formatted first time. I do not recommend this product and won’t be buying it in future. Through no fault of my own, I have been penalised half the cost for the fault on this drive. Outrageous!
