There is one common problem with most lawnmowers; the engine. It will at some point fail, and you will need to replace some of the parts. A damaged engine can cause you a lot of trouble while riding your lawn mower. Here are some tips to help you repair an engine so that you can continue to work it properly.
The first thing that you will need to do is check the battery. You should have your car’s original battery in the vehicle. If the battery is new, or is still at least half as old as the sun emblem on the hood, the battery should be able to start. If the battery is new, or older than the sun emblem, you will need to purchase a fuse. Most dealers sell fuse boxes to replace the engine’s fuse.
Next, you should inspect the wires that go to the engine. If any of these wires get burned or damaged somehow, they will need to be replaced. Make sure to take your time, and only cut the wires that need to be replaced. You don’t want to cut the wrong wires because you might not know which ones you need to remove.
Next, you should test the motor. Start the engine and make sure that it runs correctly. Pull out the ground wire on the negative terminal on the battery, and attach a wire to a good location on the engine. Put the negative wire into the hole on the engine and the positive wire into the hole on the battery. If the engine doesn’t start, this means that you need to replace the fuse. You can find replacement fuses under the hood, under the seats, and underneath the dash.
If the engine still won’t start, you need to make sure that the starter is working correctly. Start by pulling the plug out of the engine. You need to make sure that you don’t pull it too far away or you will risk your engine. Then remove the starter from the engine and move it to where it can be secured under your car. The starter will usually be a solid black, so it will be easy to see.
After you have removed the starter, you should remove the wiring for the solenoid. Start by removing the terminals from the solenoid. You should use the wire cutters to cut the wire. However, if you need to make any modifications to the solenoid, you need to use the soldering iron.
Once the wires are cut, you need to remove the plug that is attached to the solenoid. This plug may be difficult to remove without causing damage to the wires. You can tap the other end of the wire with the stud finder. You should be able to push the stud finder in all four directions. When the stud finder is no longer able to move the wire back, you need to turn the power off, and then unplug the wire.
Now that the wire is unplugged, you can safely remove the two wires from the switch. Remember that the wire that goes to the left goes to ground, and the one on the right goes to solar. You should put the switch in the same way that you removed the other one, and plug the two wires back into the outlet. The switch breaker should be able to reset, so the blades will be able to work properly again.
Now that both wires are reconnected to their respective fuses, you can start checking the blades. If you have an older model, you will need to take the three screws that hold the blades in place out, and twist them counterclockwise. Then, pull each blade and gently tug them toward the middle. Each blade should come out with the same amount of wind pulling it towards the middle.
When you have both blades replaced, you can hook up the two wires harnesses to the appropriate terminals on your switch. If you have a newer model, you should put the wires in their own little plastic case, instead of wrapping them around the wires. Then connect the wires to the blades. The sun power wire should go to the black terminal, and the ground wire should go to the white terminal.
If you have a mulching lawn mower, the switch is probably located under the rear deck close to where the tires sit. On the older model, you can start by removing the cover of the switch, and then disconnecting the wires from the old switch to the new one. You will probably need to use a screwdriver to remove the old switch cover, and then reconnect the wires. Once all the wires are connected, tighten the nut that holds the switch in place. You may want to test the circuit to make sure that the new circuit works as it is supposed to before installing the new one.
