We used the sunscreen to create some shade for our dog run during the summer. We live in AZ where the temps get up to 115+ and the dogs started to have accidents in the house at 90 degrees because the pavers/rocks got so hot they didn’t want to go outside to do their business! After putting up the shade, we haven’t had any problems since and when we got to a record 120 degrees this past week, all my dogs still went outside just fine. My puppy even sits outside under the shade instead of staying inside the air conditioned house during the heat of the day (we have a dog door so they enter/exit the house freely so I was surprised when she choose the outside to lay down). Thus, it provides enough shade to make the area comfortable! (It’s like standing underneath a shady tree when I go underneath it when the sun is beating overhead.)

We used velco ties, PVC pipes, and connector parts from Home Depot to put the structure together. We didn’t want to deal with our HOA getting mad about the shade showing (or having to deal with getting approval to install it from our house to the wall as it would be noticeable) so it’s built as high as the fence line and removable for storage when the summer is over (as it’s not the prettiest structure and we want the shade to last for as many summers as possible before the AZ sun eventually destroys it).

The shade is NOT true to size! Mine was about 6 inches short on each side (like if they cut the fabric first to be the “correct” size and THEN fold/stitched the edges and add the grommets…so a few inches are lost on all sides).

If sizing is a big deal for you, then beware! However, it wasn’t really a dealbreaker for us as it’s a temporary item – we will use only during the summers. We didn’t even know it was short in size til I measured it for this review!

I got this for my back porch so my dogs would have a cool shaded area to relax in the summer. I’ll admit this is my first sail so take my thoughts with a grain of salt, but I did a lot of research before doing this so I feel pretty comfortable that I installed this correctly. I’ve had it for one season and it’s not quite what I thought it would be.

1. This came straight from China, so it understandably took a while to be delivered. Not a huge deal, but it’s always annoying to wait 1-2 months for an order.
2. It was supposed to be a straight side sail, but I got a curved side. I decided not to return it because of issue #1.
3. I attached this to two 6×6 posts buried 4.5′ in the ground and concrete anchors on the brick of my home. I also had some ‘safety’ cables attached from the side grommets to my house in case one of the main cables broke loose (these were not tensioned). I had to tension it insanely tight to limit the sagging in the middle (it still sags 1-2′ when it rains). I tensioned this so much that the 6×6’s started to bow a few inches at the top. Ultimately, I think the material and/or weave of the middle was too lose, so that it didn’t matter how tight I got the outside border, the inside still sagged. This could also be due to the size of the sail, maybe two smaller 12’x12x would have been better.
4. The border stitching has started to tear a little from the middle material in the corners. I think this is from having to tension it so tight from issue #3.

Even with it’s issues, overall I would say it’s not a bad buy. It was cheaper than other sails I saw for this size and I figured if it lasts me 4-5 years then I will have gotten my money’s worth out of it. I think if you had this on a pergola where it was secured in more locations than just the corners, it would be perfect.

States 16×18 but its 6-9″ short on both sides. My guess is that was the size before they rolled over edges and sowed it. It should be the finished product size. Other ham the size issue it works and does what it is supposed to do. Size is why I took off 1 star.

Shade is nice nylon fabric. Does a ok job of blocking the sun. However it does stretch in time and it stretched 2 inches. In the rain, you have to support it under neath. I used metal wire rope through the holes and even that stretched as it takes a bit of time for water to get through. I have 3 inches slope but 6 or more would be better

Great product, custom cut and sewn, which by the way is very professional and quite sturdy. Does exactly what we intended it to do. Love the corner grommets very strong. We expect this product will last a long time.

While the concept is sound, the materials are ok, and the product did arrive on time, I find it highly distasteful that the actual size of my supposedly 10 x 12 shade is really 9 x 11. This foot of difference on each side could mean trouble for someone looking for a perfect fit. I HATE false advertising, and to me, whether intentional or accidental, this is false advertising. Luckily, I read the reviews (all 2 of them stating the same thing) and I knew the tarp would be short. 9 x 11 fits my needs so I will be keeping this, but please Sunshade Depot, FIX YOUR DESCRIPTIONS!
